Weigh2GoBC

How does a carrier benefit from being in the Weigh2GoBC program?

In addition to non-financial benefits, studies and pilot participants have shown that significant cost savings in fuel and time can be attained by being part of the Weigh2GoBC program.

Financial Benefits

Time Savings

Interviews with participating carriers have shown that each bypass of an inspection station saves approximately 10 minutes of driver time. This includes the time it takes to decelerate when entering an inspection station, driving through that station and then attaining highway speed once back out on the highway.

Let’s use an example of a Carrier that has 20 vehicles that drive a round trip from Vancouver to Calgary two times per week.

The vehicles would be required to attend 3 inspection stations each way during this journey (Hope, Kamloops and Golden). If each stop takes approximately 10 minutes per station, this return trip would equate to a total of 60 minutes of savings per vehicle.

Over the course of 4 weeks, this equates to a savings of 160 driver hours or more than 2,080 hours per year!

4 week calculation = (1 hr per trip x 20 vehicles x 2 trips per week x 4 weeks)

Fuel Savings

Studies1 show that a commercial vehicle uses between 0.41 litres and 0.733 litres when reporting to an inspection station. This includes the time it takes to decelerate off of the highway and to accelerate back out onto the highway. Using the median between the two examples, 0.5715 litres, and a very conservative fuel cost of $1.00 per litre, one can easily calculate the cost savings.

Again, let’s use our example of having 20 vehicles in a fleet and each of these vehicles drives from Vancouver to Calgary and back twice per week.  During each trip they pass 6 Weigh2GoBC stations. If they each received a green light at all 6 inspection stations allowing them to bypass, the savings would be as follows:

20 vehicles x 2 trips per week x 4 weeks x 6 stations per trip
x 0.5715 litres per bypass x $1.00 per litre
= $548.64 saved in 4 weeks or $7,132.32 per year!

Non Financial Benefits

Records Verification

Each Carrier will have access to their own encounter data. This data will provide you with the date, time and station that the vehicle passed, the screening result at each of those stations, whether or not a vehicle got a red light or a green light and can thus be used to verify paper log books.

Driver Monitoring

A Random Report Percentage is assigned to each vehicle. If you have a driver that you are monitoring closely, you can request that the driver’s vehicle have a higher RRP than the rest of your fleet. For example, you may have a new driver that is still on probation; or a seasoned driver that has attained a number of infractions; by raising the RRP for that vehicle, you will ensure that they are reporting to the stations a greater number of times in order to ensure compliance.
