Take Me Out To The Ball Game
Because We’re Not Just About Highways
It’s a little known fact, but as a ministry we look after a lot more than just transportation. In 2008, we had “infrastructure” added to our repertoire, and with that we started managing grant money for all kinds of community developments.
Together with municipal and federal governments, we’ve helped fund hundreds of projects throughout the province, including community and art centres, libraries… and ball parks.
Back in 2010, Kamloops broke ground on their own field of dreams – Rayleigh Slo-Pitch Park. It was an impressive vision: Eight slo-pitch diamonds built to national tournament standards; rugby pitches, a playground, walking paths, picnic area and more. Just over a year later, the park opened with Mayor Peter Milobar getting things underway with the inaugural pitch.
The park’s official grand opening was held on Sunday, September 11, 2011, unveiling its name as the Tournament Capital Ranch.
Recreational projects like these are great for communities, because they help encourage people to get out and get active, but it also helps the local economy, too. With Kamloops having their own “softball city”, they’re building on their reputation as a destination for world-class tournament play, which will bring in more teams and more tourists to enjoy everything Kamloops has to offer.
It’s a great project to support, but you probably won’t see us in the dugouts anytime soon. Not that we don’t love softball, it’s just our typical uniform includes orange vests and hard hats, and we’d stick out like a sore thumb.
