Traffic Data Program

Vehicle Length & Speed Classification Data (VLS)

The Ministry now operates a number of vehicle classification perm-count stations around the province. The continuous data from these sites is used to generate combined-direction quarterly and annual summary reports. Distribution of vehicle types using the highway is in accordance with the following:

Five Length Bin Classification Scheme:

0-6.0m 6.0-12.5m 12.5-22.5m 22.5-35.0m >35.0m

Although the British Columbia vehicle length classification scheme is not directly comparable to the FHWA13 axle configuration classifications, there are some similarities based on the study conducted by TAC on vehicle dimensions (ref. "Design Vehicle Dimensions for Use in Geometric Design", TAC, Dec. 1997).
