SQUAMISH SOUTH

Squamish South

The Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement Project brings a legacy to the south of Squamish with the scheduled spring completion of the Stawamus Chief pedestrian overpass. The four lanes of road between Shannon Falls and the Stawamus River are complete and work on the east side of the Stawamus River bridge continues with completion scheduled for the summer of 2009.

This section is a 4-lane divided highway featuring safer protected T-intersections and an improved signalized intersection at Darrell Bay Rd serving Shannon Falls Provincial Park. This was a technically challenging section requiring the construction of new bridges over Gonzales and Shannon Creeks, and one of the project’s largest rock excavations south of Shannon Falls.

FEATURES

Shannon Falls

Excavating the Darrell Bay bluffs back far enough to accommodate two northbound lanes of traffic meant that the access to the Papoose trail had to be relocated. The trail is picked up to the left of the new gravel ramp at the entrance to Shannon Falls Provincial Park.

Protected Access

A protected-T access to Stawamus Chief Park has been built at the intersection of the highway with the new access road pictured here, greatly improving safety for vehicles entering and leaving the Park.

Pedestrian Bridge

The pedestrian bridge connecting a new southbound pullout with the Stawamus Chief hiking/climbing area provides safe access for those who wish to explore further after stopping for a quick look or photo of the iconic rock face.

Trucks

Apron Connector

The Apron Connector Trail constructed in the fall of 2008 provides safe pedestrian access off the highway from the Apron parking area at the Mamquam Forest Service Road to hiking, climbing and bouldering in the rest of the Stawamus Chief Park.
