Accomplishment
Statements -

Behavioural
Competencies:
A competency is any behaviour that drives how you accomplish
work and is essential for superior performance in the
job or role.
Behavioural
competencies in the BC Public Service are starting to
be used for:
• Screening; and
• Interviewing.
Screening:
Competencies help to select the right people for the right
roles. Competency-based staffing goes beyond simply matching
job requirements with a person’s academic credentials
or technical qualifications. The focus is on the behaviours
that result in exceptional performance and determining
how closely candidates can perform those behaviours.
When
applying for a position that has advertised competency
qualifications, using Accomplishment
Statements will help you to describe your practical
experience in a way that highlights the specific competencies
and behaviours that the panel is looking for and will
help to get you invited further in the process.
Interviewing:
Increasingly, behaviourally-based interview techniques
are being used to identify those competencies.
Traditionally
in interviews, you might be asked a situational question
like, "What would you do if a customer was unhappy
with your service?"
Behavioural
questions begin with phrases like, "tell me about
a time when," or "can you give me an example
of." The interviewer wants to hear your real-life
examples. When an interviewer asks such questions, he
or she is listening for examples of how you handled situations
similar to the ones you may handle for their organization.
This is your chance to talk about your accomplishments
and demonstrate, through examples (preferably recent ones),
that you've succeeded in certain areas of interest. After
all, if you did it somewhere else yesterday, you can do
it for this organization tomorrow.
When
preparing for this type of interview, the internet can
be a valuable tool and a search of the key words ‘behavioural
interview’ should result in many useful links.
