Highway 19A Northfield Transportation Study

Highway 19A Northfield Transportation Study (8.80 MB PDF January 2009)

The City of Nanaimo, School District 68 and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure partnered to undertake a transportation study of the Hwy 19A Northfield area in Nanaimo.

The study was initiated because of ongoing operational and safety issues at the intersections of Hwy 19A Northfield Road and the adjacent Northfield Road/Boundary Avenue intersection. The intersections are near a high school and are bisected by both the E&N rail line and the E&N cycling/pedestrian trail. Boundary Avenue serves as one route to the Nanaimo Regional Hospital.

The work, completed in January 2009, was carried out by ISL Engineering, an engineering firm under contract to the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

The report recommends makes both short and longer term recommendations.

The intersection of Boundary/Northfield falls within the City’s jurisdiction. The intersection of Hwy 19A Northfield is the responsibility of the Ministry.

The Ministry realizes the importance of a safe and reliable transportation system, serving motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. In urban areas the Ministry works closely with the applicable municipality to balance the needs of all highway users.
