Board-Approved Rates

Licensed passenger directed vehicles (PDVs) in British Columbia must charge rates that are set or approved by the PT Board.  PDVs include taxis, limousines, shuttles and vans that accommodate no more than 11 passengers.

The regulation of rates and rules creates an environment where passengers are charged reasonable and predictable prices for transportation services, and where operators can properly maintain the vehicles. The Board also seeks to maintain a price distinction between taxicabs and limousines.

Bridge Tolls

The Golden Ears Bridge links Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge to Langley, Surrey and beyond. Tolls apply to each trip across the bridge, in either direction. The Board has established two rules respecting the toll rate that operators may charge a passenger who hires transportation which includes crossing the Golden Ears Bridge.

One rule sets what a taxi operator may charge and under what conditions. The other rule requires that any passenger directed vehicle that charges individual fares must not charge a passenger for crossing the Golden Ears Bridge. However, these operators may request a rate adjustment for directly-affected fares. The deadline for requesting an individual fares rate adjustment is December 31, 2009.

Taxi Cost Index (TCI)

The TCI is an objective measurement for determining permanent rate increases for taxis. Based on 2007 data, the TCI 2009 of 3.16% takes effect on January 1, 2009. The index components are: Wages 31%; fuel 19%; insurance 13% and Consumer Price Index (“CPI”) 37%. The CPI is adjusted to 80% of the 37% to encourage business efficiencies and reduce duplication of fuel and other costs. The Board reviews TCI cost data every spring. The next review of 2008 TCI data is planned for Spring 2009.
