$12.9 Million Campbell Road Interchange Project Ceremonial Opening
May 9, 2008 - The Westbank First Nation (WFN) hosted the ceremonial opening of the Campbell Road Interchange on-site, at the west side access to the existing Okanagan Lake Bridge and the soon-to-be opened William R. Bennett Bridge. The WFN was given the reins of management for this project, the first time a First Nation has steered a major transportation upgrade project. The WFN and the contractor, Emil Anderson Construction delivered the project on time and on budget, with the official handover to take place in early summer. Placement of commemorative art should be completed by summer.The Campbell Road Interchange will provide freer flowing traffic on and off the new William R. Bennett Bridge and is a key up-grade in the on-going Okanagan corridor/Highway 97 improvement project.

May 9, 2008 – Minister Falcon was on hand, along with Okanagan-Westside MLA Rick Thorpe and Okanagan-Lakeside MLA Al Horning, as guests of the Westbank First Nation (WFN), managers of the $12.9 Million dollar project. The official handover will take place in early summer once all cosmetic work is completed. WFN dancers helped to celebrate the new interchange which is on budget and on time, The Campbell Road Interchange will provide freer flowing traffic on and off the new William R. Bennett Bridge and is a key up-grade in the on-going Okanagan corridor/Highway 97 improvement project.

Unique Westbank First Nation BC150 Sign Unveiled
May 9, 2008 – Minister Falcon and Westbank First Nation (WFN) Chief Robert Louie proudly unveiled the BC150 sign during the ceremonial opening/handover of the WFN-managed Campbell Road Interchange at the west side access to the existing Okanagan Lake Bridge and the soon-to-be opened William R. Bennett Bridge. The new BC150 sign has been placed at one of the new interchange's roundabouts.

B.C. Commits $4.3 Million for Malahat Commuter Service
May 9, 2008 – VICTORIA – The Province is committing $4.3 million towards a new Malahat commuter bus service between the Cowichan Valley and downtown Victoria, Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon and BC Transit president Manuel Achadinha announced May 7. The commuter service will run between Shawnigan Lake and Victoria, and Duncan and Victoria. Admiring a bus similar to those that will be used for the commuter service is: (left to right) BC Transit bus operator Bruce Gray, Hon. Murray Coell, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands, Ron Cantelon, MLA for Nanaimo-Parksville, Hon. $20.5 Million for New BC Transit Buses, Better Service
April 21, 2008 – Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon (centre), is joined by Shirley Bond, MLA Prince George-Mount Robson (left), John Rustad, MLA for Prince George-Omineca, and BC Transit president Manuel Achadinha (right) in Prince George to announce $20.5 million in new provincial funding for BC Transit. B.C Gives $47 Million for TransLink Fleet Expansion
April 11, 2008 – Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon (right) and TransLink board chair Dale Parker announce an expansion of TransLink's fleet of buses, trolleys and SkyTrain cars worth $150 million. The Ministry of Transportation is providing $47 million towards the expansion, which will add 103 buses and 14 SkyTrain cars to TransLink's fleet. The provincial funding is the first from the $14-billion Provincial Transit Plan.

Transit plan to help B.C. reach greenhouse gas targets
Monday, January 14, 2008 – Premier Campbell and Minister Kevin Falcon take the stage to announce the $14 billion Provincial Transit Plan, a new strategy to double transit ridership by increasing travel choices for people around the province. Government Introduces Pilot Project for Zero Emission Electric Vehicles
November 29, 2007 – The B.C. government is moving forward with a pilot project to enable the broader use of zero emission electric vehicles across British Columbia. Flyover Provides Safer Access to UBC Okanagan
October 1 – A transit bus is the first vehicle to cross the flyover into the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBC Okanagan) campus, marking it’s official opening. Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon, Kelowna Mayor Sharon Shepherd and UBC Okanagan deputy vice chancellor Doug Owram were on hand to celebrate the three-way partnership that helped build the structure, which will improve safety and reduce congestion by taking campus traffic over Highway 97.

Park Bridge Opening Ceremonies
August 30 – The new Park Bridge along the Trans Canada Highway in Kicking Horse Canyon was officially opened August 30th. The bridge is a 405-metre span with five piers reaching as high as 90 metres. The historic section of highway is now safer and allows traffic to flow more smoothly. Unveiling the plaque are Trans-Park Highway Group president John McArthur, Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon, MP Jim Abbott, project worker Bruce "Klinger" Milum, and Premier Gordon Campbell.

Coquihalla Highway System Complete
July 24 - Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon tightens the bolts on a directional sign at the intersection of the Okanagan Connector (Highway 97C) and Kane Valley Road, outside of Merritt, on July 24. Installation of the sign put the final touches to an $18-million project that increased from two to four lanes a nine kilometre stretch of the Connector. The Coquihalla Highway System is now at least four lanes over its entire 300-kilometre route and is considered officially complete. It was 30 years ago that B.C. announced it would build the Coquihalla.

February 9 – Premier Gordon Campbell, the Honourable David Emerson, Federal Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Pacific Gateway and the Vancouver-Whistler Olympics, Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon and local MP James Moore, Parliamentary Secretary for the Pacific Gateway, broke ground on the site of what will be a new seven-lane bridge across the Pitt River. The federal and provincial governments have a cost-sharing agreement where the Province is providing $108 million and the federal government $90 million for the construction of the bridge and a new interchange at Lougheed Highway and Mary Hill Bypass. Governments Break Ground on First Gateway Project
February 9 – Premier Gordon Campbell and Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon take questions from the media at the ground breaking ceremony for the new seven lane bridge and interchange to be built across the Pitt River. This is the first provincial Gateway Program project to begin construction. Vehicle traffic has tripled since 1985. The cable-stayed bridge design will significantly reduce traffic congestion and delays as well as reducing interference with marine traffic.

Governments Break Ground on First Gateway Project
February 9 – Artist rendering of the new seven lane bridge and grade separated interchange to be built over the Pitt River. The team of Peter Kiewit & Sons (PKS) won the competitive bidding process for this project. The new bridge will replace the two existing swing bridges. With fewer piers in the river, this new bridge will also reduce impacts to the environment and marine users. Work will begin immediately and the project is expected to be complete by November 2009.

Premier Recognizes Kicking Horse Canyon Workers
Project Site 15 km east of Golden – Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon looks on as Premier Gordon Campbell acknowledges the contribution of the 250 workers involved in the Kicking Horse Canyon Project. Premier Campbell and Minister Falcon toured the second phase of the upgrade being done to improve the safety and efficiency of approximately 26 km of the Trans-Canada Highway from the junction of Highway 95 in Golden to the western boundary of Yoho National Park.

$2 Million to Promote Active Commuting Options
Premier Gordon Campbell and Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon are joined by Vancouver cycling legend Lorne "Ace" Atkinson to announce cycling infrastructure projects in a dozen communities around the province. The projects will receive $2 million in funding to create more options for commuting and recreational cycling. 18 projects will add more than 22 km of new bike lanes and trails. Communities receiving funding this year include Vancouver, Burnaby, Langley, Maple Ridge, Victoria, Saanich, Courtenay, Kelowna, Vernon, Coldstream, Quesnel and Prince George.

Working Together to Improve Transportation Links
June 20 – Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon and Washington State Secretary of Transportation Doug MacDonald sign a new B.C.-Washington Transportation Protocol Agreement to improve cross-border transportation. The protocol commits both jurisdictions to improve communication on incidents that affect cross-border travel. The protocol also commits B.C. and Washington to support greater use of Intelligent Transportation Systems at the border.

B.C. and Washington Call to Delay Passport Requirement
June 20 – The governments of British Columbia and Washington have joined together in a joint letter to the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of Canada to call for a delay to the proposed passport requirements for re-entry into the United States. The letter was signed by B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell and Washington Governor Chris Gregoire at the first ever high-level dialogue between the two jurisdictions, held in Vancouver, B.C., to address shared security issues and to improve cross-border relations.

Canada Line Kicks off Tunnel Boring in Vancouver
June 10 – (L-R) YVR President Larry Berg, Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon, TransLink Chair Malcolm Brodie, Vancouver City Councillors Suzanne Anton and George Chow, and South Surrey – White Rock – Cloverdale MP Ross Hiebert marked the start of tunnel boring construction for the Canada Line from False Creek to downtown Vancouver. Held at the tunnel boring machine entry site located on 2nd Avenue, at the south end of the Cambie Street Bridge, the tunnel boring machine was launched with champagne and by tradition named after five-year old Leilani Henry, the Chief Engineer’s daughter.

Majority Supports Tolling Twinned Port Mann Bridge

People were specifically consulted on goals for interchange upgrades and draft options for congestion reduction measures such as HOV lanes, transit and commercial vehicle priority access to highway on/off-ramps and improvements to the cycling network. OOCL Vancouver Maiden Voyage from the Port of Vancouver
March 7, 2006 – Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) celebrates the inaugural voyage of the OOCL Vancouver, the newest addition to the OOCL container fleet at the Port of Vancouver. Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon and Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan joined OOCL officials to celebrate the maiden voyage of the new 5,888-TEU (twenty foot equivalent) container vessel that will serve growing Trans-Pacific trade.

February 9, 2006 – The giant pipe of the Gaz.ex cannon above the snow. 21 of these permanent implacements have been installed across Kootenay Pass since 1993, at a cost of $4 million. The remote system has reduced avalanche-related highway closure times in the pass, one of the most avalanche prone in North America, by over 50 per cent and is already saving the economy almost $2 million each year.

November 28, 2005 – The Ministry
of Transportation has defined a set of improvements designed
to make travel along the Sea-to-Sky corridor safer for residents,
commuters and tourists. The Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement
Project is the first major provincial transportation project
in B.C. to be procured as a public-private partnership using
a Design-Build-Finance-Operate (DBFO) public-private partnership
contract. The project will create 6,000 new jobs throughout
the province as a result of economic activity generated along
the corridor, and will increase provincial GDP by $300 million
over the period of 2010 to 2025.

Rolling

November 12, 2005 – Minister Falcon is one
of the first cyclists across the new CPR overpass in Port
Moody. The total length of the structure is 172.7 meters and
the main span is supported by four cables on each side of
the bridge, attached to two towers.

Mt.
Lehman Interchange Reaches First Milestone
October 28, 2005 – Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon
and Abbotsford Mayor Mary Reeves join Abbotsford Mt. Lehman
MLA Mike De Jong and officially open the new Mt. Lehman overpass
in Abbotsford's Hybrid car and a Smart Car. The Province and
the City are partners in the $24.8 million project. The new
overpass crosses the Trans Canada Highway at Mt. Lehman Road.
It is the second of three new overpasses being constructed
to improve traffic flow at this key gateway to the City of
Abbotsford.

traffic is increasing exponentially in China and Chinese ports
are expanding right now to handle new container traffic. China's
port expansions presents real opportunity for British Columbia
to be Asia's Gateway of Choice for North America. Asia-Pacific
container traffic to North America is forecast to expand by
300 percent in the next 15 years. A one percent increase in
container traffic through British Columbia ports means $250
million per year and 4,000 new jobs for British Columbia’s
economy. By 2020 the port industry alone could grow to support
50,000 jobs, pumping $1.7 billion into the B.C. economy.

Trade Mission to the People's Republic of China
September 6, 2005 – Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon
and a model of the Shanghai Maglev Transrapid train. The trains
connect Shanghai and Shanghai-Pudong International Airport and
are propelled by magnetic levitation. The trains can travel
an astonishing 430 kilometres per hour. The delegation has learned
that, similar to the RAV protect in Vancouver, many of China's
gateway cities are building rapid transit between their commercial
centres and their airports.

Safety Inspections Meet Kelowna Truckers
August 9, 2005 – Minister of Transportation Kevin Falcon
was in Kelowna today with transportation district manager
Grant Lachmuth and Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement inspectors
at a surprise inspection station. Minister Falcon spent time
working with inspection teams as they pulled over and looked
at all aspects of the travelling safety of commercial trucks
on the roads.

Red Bridge Ready for the Future
July 28, 2005 – Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon
joins Don and Anna Bartlett, owners of Don and Anna's Greenhouse
and members of the Red Bridge Heritage Committee; Okanagan
Similkameen Regional District Area Director Roger Mayer and
residents of Keremeos to unveil the upgraded Ashnola Bridge
across the lower Similkameen River. Members of the Red Bridge
Heritage Committee, the Okanagan-Similkameen Regional District
and Ministry of Transportation staff have worked for two years
to restore and upgrade the historic bridge. Known locally
as the Red Bridge, the Ashnola Bridge was constructed in 1911.
The bridge first served Keremeos and the Ashnola Valley as
a railway bridge and more recently as a highway bridge. It
is the last remaining covered bridge in the lower Similkameen
Valley, one of the last covered bridges in North America and
an enduring symbol of the turn of the century Gold Rush in
the area.

June 28, 2005 – Westbank First Nation Chief Robert Louie
is flanked by the Ministers of Transportation and Small Business
and Revenue (& Deregulation), the Honorable Kevin Falcon
and the Honorable Rick Thorpe. Minister Falcon made the June
29, 2005 official announcement of the selection of SNC-Lavalin
as the company to design, build, finance and operate the new
William R. Bennett Bridge in Kelowna. With a capital cost
of building the bridge set at $144.5 million, the government
will save over $16 million in construction, financing, maintenance
and rehabilitation costs over the 30-year contract, than if
the bridge was delivered by traditional means.

$22-million Swan Lake Interchange Officially Opens
November
15, 2004 – Minister of Transportation,
Kevin Falcon (right), Okanagan-Vernon MLA Tom Christensen
(far left) and Shuswap MLA George Abbott unveil a
plaque commemorating the opening of the new $22-million Swan
Lake to Larkin Road interchange, just north of Vernon.
The new interchange will improve traveler safety while reducing
travel times in a busy intersection that sees 27,000 vehicles
per day. Swan Lake is the largest highway project completed
in the Heartlands this year and was completed under budget
by half a million dollars.
