Traveled way: the portion of roadway for the movement of vehicles, exclusive of shoulders, gutters and auxiliary lanes.

Trip: a journey from an origin to a destination. For example, a person leaving home and proceeding to an arena to drop off a child, then to a supermarket to shop, then to an office to pick up a spouse, then to home has undertaken four trips: home-arena, arena-supermarket, supermarket-office, office-home. The home has generated one trip, home-arena, and has attracted one trip: office-home. The home has produced two trips: home-arena and office-home.
