Approval Process

The Ministry’s application process has five stages, each with a number of separate steps.

1. Preparation:

The applicant decides on a proposal to obtain permission for use of occupation of the highway.

The applicant prepares and submits an application for a permit or for Ministry approval.

3. Evaluation:

The Ministry of Transportation receives the application and evaluates it according to a variety of criteria.

4. Ministry Decision:

Ministry develop approval staff decide whether to issue a permit or approval for the proposal.

5. Implementation:

The applicant completes the work according to the provisions laid out in the permit or the approval letter.

The process of obtaining permits and approvals can rarely take place in an afternoon. Sometimes site visits and site impact analyses will be necessary before Ministry staff can make a decision on your proposal.

In order to reduce the time for approval, we suggest you follow these steps:

Submit a complete application with accurate information.
Keep a record of our file number and have it handy whenever you contact us.
Inquire about the expected processing time for your type of application.
Keep a record of approvals, correspondence, and decisions from meetings.
Keep deviations from established policy or standards to a minimum. Remember that the more a proposal differs from established policy or standards, the more time it will take to process.
Do your part, and do it on time. If a proposal needs to be revised in order to meet provincial goals, policies or standards you should consider doing so. Your proposal has a better chance of obtaining approval more quickly if it meets those criteria.
Follow up with outside agencies on the status of your application.
Familiarize yourself with the review process.

Be patient... all applications are dealt with on a "first come, first served" basis and there may be many applications ahead of yours. We will do everything we can to speed the process.
