Highway Planning


Highway Planning's mandate is to provide leadership, guidance, expert advice and direction to government regarding highway transportation issues facing the province.

The branch works at the macro level to ensure that recommended improvements are technically sound and defensible.  As a headquarters function, the Branch is responsible for the ministry's transportation systems planning program, which includes:

  • Defining the highway planning process, establishing necessary standards, and auditing performance;
  • Leading the development of the provincial highway system;
  • Developing and implementing the ministry's development approvals program;
  • Managing the interface between transportation planning and the development of the highway system;
  • Managing the delivery of the transportation planning program, including professional leadership, guidance and direction to regional offices, provincial systems analysis, monitoring progress, and directing program interventions;
  • Providing a framework for the management of the Ministry's transportation data and information;
  • Providing and supporting economic analysis as part of the planning process.

There are four different sections of the branch that support these functions. They are:

  • Highway Planning Section
  • Economic Analysis Section
  • Information Management Section.
