The ministry's 14 fresh water ferry routes are an integral link in British Columbia's transportation network.
The freshwater fleet consists of six free-running vessels, five reaction ferries, two aerial tramways (for winter use) and five cable ferries as well as tugboats and barges. The fleet carries more than 2.4 million passengers and more than 1.5 million vehicles annually.
The Marine Branch:
ensures that operators provide safe, efficient and effective operation of all Ministry of Transportation inland ferries;
ensures the maintenance and repair of inland ferries and docks;
oversees the Coastal Ferry Services Contract between the Province and British Columbia Ferry Services Inc.; and
ensures that the ferries operate in compliance with appropriate marine acts and regulations.
