Hired Equipment Program Information

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure established the Hired Equipment Program in the late 1970s in recognition of its intent to have lists of equipment available for hire within the Province, and to implement the hiring of equipment, on an hourly basis for day-labour projects and/or emergency response situations.

One of the key objectives of this Program is to fairly and equitably distribute the available work to equipment owners within the Province, in the most cost effective manner, recognizing local seniority in providing historical service to the Ministry.

The information available on this site provides an overview of the program and specific procedures for equipment owners / operators who either want to get involved or are already involved in the Ministry’s Hired Equipment Program.

2012/2013 Fuel Adjustment

The Ministry in conjunction with industry representatives has determined that there is a need to provide for monthly adjustments to the hourly rates paid for Hired Equipment to ensure fairness and reflect the potential volatility of fuel pricing in today’s global economy. The adjustment is not intended to compensate for provincial policy related to the Carbon Tax which has specific carbon reduction objectives.

Accordingly we will be offering a monthly fuel adjustment to compensate owners as needed.

The adjustment will be based on the MJ Ervin (BC) average monthly price of fuel using two groupings of equipment; “On-Road” and “Off-Road”. The former being highway licensed vehicles and the latter being heavy equipment not licensable for highway use.

  • On-Road Equipment @ average of 15 L / hour (e.g. gravel trucks)
  • Off-Road Equipment @ average of 35 L / hour (e.g. heavy equipment such as excavators)

Adjustment will only be made on every (+/-) $0.05 change in the average price of fuel.

This will equate to:

  • (+/-) $0.75 / hr for On-Road Equipment for each adjustment increment
  • (+/-) $1.75 / hr for Off-Road Equipment for each adjustment increment
