South Coast Region Highway Projects


 

Hwy 1 – Centre Median Project – Cassidy Median
On September 24, 2009 the Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada announced a jointly funded centre median project on Highway 1 from Cedar Road to Nanaimo River Road.

The new concrete barrier is expected to be placed in the summer of 2010.

Hwy 10 and Hwy 15 — Border Infrastructure Project — Milling and Paving
Imperial Paving Limited was awarded a contract valued at $372,900.00 for milling and paving approaches on two Highway 10 bridges and four bridges on Highway 15. The project is expected to be completed by October 30, 2009.

Hwy 99 Southbound — CNR Overhead Bridge — Deck Widening
Western Versatile Construction Corp. was awarded a contract valued at $3,082,755.00 to widen the CNR Overhead Bridge on Highway 99.  The project is expected to be completed by April 30, 2010.

Hwy 14 – Metchosin to Sooke – Cold Milling and Inlay Asphalt Paving
O.K. Industries Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $1,290,675.00 for Cold Milling and Inlay Asphalt Paving. The project is expected to start in September 2009 and end October 8, 2009.

Darrell Bay Ferry Terminal Rehabilitation Project
Ruskin Construction Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $1,822,650 for pile installation; repairs and modification to the existing timber trestle; installation of a pontoon, ramp and apron; installation of two floating leads; and construction of a new ramp abutment at Darrell Bay, south of Squamish. The Darrell Bay Ferry Terminal is being rehabilitated to enable the provision of emergency ferry transportation between Squamish and the Lower Mainland in the event of extended emergency highway closures on Highway 99 between Porteau Cove and Darrell Bay. Construction is expected to start September 1, 2009 and end November 30, 2009.

Hwy 31 – Coffee Creek Bluff – Catch Fence, Slope Mesh Maintenance
Pacific Blasting & Demolition Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $398,000.00 for rock fall protection consisting of erecting an 80 metre long, 4 metre high, catch fence with the capacity to contain high energy rock falls, and repairs and rehabilitation of existing slope mesh structures at the site. The project is expected to start September 1, 2009 and end October 30, 2009.

Old Capilano Bridge Replacement
The Old Capilano Bridge will be replaced as part of the Marine Drive Transit Priority Project announced in April 2009.

Mission Bridge No. 2317 – River Span Rehabilitation – Phase 1
Kingston Construction Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $1,191,964.00 for bridge rehabilitation work. The project is expected to start August 4, 2009, and be completed by October 15, 2009.

Hwy 7 – Nelson to Wren – 4-Laning
Imperial Paving Limited was awarded a contract valued at $5,727,719.69 to provide a design for a four lane upgrade from two lanes between Nelson Street and Wren Street (2.1 km). The contract includes replacing a 2 lane Silverdale Creek Bridge with a 4 lane structure, including sidewalks on both sides and improved shoulder widths and a Review Impact design for development of the Nelson Street intersection. Possible partnering opportunities with the District of Mission and Local Developers (Genstar) within the project limits will be examined. Limit of storage at Wren will be reviewed. The project is expected to start in June 2009 and end in March 2011.

Hwy17 – McTavish Road Interchange – Construction of a New Interchange
The Ministry is proceeding with the detailed design and construction of a new interchange on Highway 17 at McTavish Road. The new interchange will improve safety, enhance transit and improve access to and from the Victoria International Airport while accommodating cyclists and pedestrians and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Gateway Program, South Fraser Perimeter Road – 80th Street to Hwy 91 – Preload and Drainage Construction
Matcon Excavation & Shoring Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $4,114,590.32 for site preparation and staged installation of preload fill to consolidate underlying soft soils, as well as relocation of drainage facilities, sanitary sewers, water lines and electrical services to accommodate the preload fill prior to road construction.

Gateway Program – South Fraser Perimeter Road – Highway 99 to 80th Street, Delta B.C. – Preload, Drainage and Utility Construction
B&B Contracting Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $8,936,600.00 for site preparation and staged installation of preload fill to consolidate underlying soft soils, as well as relocation of drainage facilities, sanitary sewers, water lines and electrical services to accommodate the preload fill prior to road construction. The project is expected to start April 1st, 2009, and end October 16th, 2009.

Hwy 3 – Cedar 1 & 2 Bridges 1218 & 1219
West Bridge Corp. was awarded a contract valued at $5,367,932.05 to replace 2 deteriorated bridges located on Hwy 3.  Cedar 1 is furthest west and is two lanes while Cedar 2 is 3 lanes.

The contractor will construct temporary bridges and detours, dismantle old bridges, construct new bridges and dismantle detour bridges. The project is expected to start August 4, 2009 and end March 31, 2011.

Gateway Program – South Fraser Perimeter Road – Hwy 17 to Hwy 99 – Preload, Drainage and Utility Construction
Mainland Civil Works Inc. was awarded a contract valued at $8,175,630.04 for the SFPR project. This project is part of the Province’s Gateway Program, to improve the movement of people, goods, and transit throughout Metro Vancouver. The SFPR will be a new 40 km long, four-lane route along the south side of the Fraser River. It will extend from Deltaport Way in Southwest Delta to 176th Street (Hwy 15) in Surrey, with connections to Highway 1, 91, 99 and to TransLink's new Golden Ears Bridge, which is scheduled for completion in 2009.

The Highway 17 to Highway 99 Preload, Drainage and Utility Construction contract involves site preparation and staged installation of preload fill to consolidate underlying soft soils, as well as relocation of drainage facilities, and sanitary sewers to accommodate the preload fill prior to road construction. The project is expected to start February 1, 2009 and end October 31, 2009.

Gateway Program – South Fraser Perimeter Road - Tannery Interchange to Port Mann Bridge – Preload, Drainage, and Utility Construction
Tyam Construction Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $22,885,000 for site preparation and staged installation of preload fill prior to highway construction. The project is expected to be completed by December 31, 2012.

Hwy 99 – Function Junction to Village Gate BoulevardWhistler Improvements
Separate from the Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement Project, Hwy 99 Whistler Improvements include: improvements at the southbound approach to Function Junction; an easier grade at Nordic Hill; wider shoulders for cycling and incident management; two improved bus bays/pullouts, and four new bus bays/pullouts. The project is scheduled for completion in fall 2009.
