Old Alaska Highway — Improvements

Hwy 16 — Hankin Avenue Intersection Improvement / Resurfacing from Bulkley River Bridge to Telkwa / Smithers Side Roads Paving
Magnum Road Builders Inc. was awarded a contract valued at $6,962,658.50for the following:
- Improving the intersection of Hankin Avenue and Highway 16 to raise the grade and construct a pedestrian underpass
- Highway 16 from the Bulkley River Bridge near Smithers to Tower St. in Telkwa
- Resurfacing Newens, Scotia and Cedar roads in Smithers with new asphalt

McBride Area Road Improvements
O.K. Industries Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $813,988.00 to do a sealcoat overlay of existing hard surfaced roads and a new double sealcoat on gravel roads in the Blue River/Avola/Mount Robson and Valemount areas. The sealcoating will improve traction, restore the running surface and prolong the service life of the asphalt. The project is expected to start July 15, 2008, and end August 29, 2008.

Hwy52S – Dead Elk Pit to Hwy 28 – Hot-in-Place Recycling
Peter Bros. Construction Ltd. was awarded a $6.5 million contract to resurface 31.2 km of Highway 52S from Dead Elk Pit to the Highway 29 intersection in Tumbler Ridge by using hot-in-place recycling. The project is expected to start in July 2008 and end September 12, 2008.

Hwy 16 – Southridge Overpass to Highway 97, Highway 97 – intersection rehabilitation of 22, 15, 10, and 5 Avenues and Prince George Area Side Road – Paving
Pittman Asphalt was just awarded a $4.3 million contract to rehabilitate Highway 16 from Southridge Overpass to Highway 97 and Highway 97 intersection between Highway 16 and the John Hart Bridge. The resurfacing project will support local commuter, industrial and tourism traffic that uses this busy corridor, including expanded log hauling resulting from the mountain pine beetle harvesting. The project is expected to start in June 2008 and end October 15, 2008.

Cariboo Connector – Prince George South – Weigh Scale Relocation and 4 Laning
JJM Construction Ltd. was just awarded an $18 million contract to build a commercial vehicle inspection station and expand the Cariboo Connector. The new scale location will reduce average commercial vehicle delay by several minutes per vehicle, and the new road will increase the route’s safety and efficiency. West Bypass – Upgrades
Forbes Industrial Contractors Ltd. was just awarded a $1.5 million contract to upgrade 4.2 km of West Bypass. This project will provide the travelling public with safer, stronger infrastructure and restore the passage of fish species and the normal hydrologic characteristics of the Stoddart Creek watershed. The project is expected to start in April 2008 and end October 2008.

Francois Lake – Southside
A $1.7 million contract has been awarded to Arrowsmith Road Maintenance Ltd. of Saanichton to provide Sealcoat overlay of the existing asphalt surfaces from the Francois Lake Southbank Ferry Landing to the community of Wisteria. Sideroads such as Uncha Lake, Eakin Settlement to Takysie Lake, and East Ootsa will also be sealed. Palling Road near Burns lake will also be done. The work will start May 22, 2008 and the project completion date is June 28, 2008.

Hwy 97 – Alaska Highway Corridor – Improvements-Phase 3b
CTL Contractors Ltd. of Prince George has been awarded a contract valued at just over $3.5 million. The project will include 2.0 km between Hwy 97 and 269 Avenue and the intersection of Hwy 97 and 271 Road. The scope of work includes the twinning of the existing highway between 269 Avenue and 271 Road and finalizing signal improvements at the 271 intersection. Work is scheduled to begin in May 2008, and the project completion date is October 31, 2008.

Hwy 16 – Hankin Avenue Intersection Improvements – Building Demolition
Snaring River of Prince George has been awarded a contract of just under $70,000 for the demolition of two buildings, waste disposal and site clean-up at the intersection of Highway 16 and Hankin Avenue in Telkwa. Upon completion, the site should be ready for constructing the Hankin Avenue Intersection improvement project. The work start date was February 25, 2008, and the Project completion date is April 30, 2008.

Hwy 37 – Bob Quinn to Burrage Airstrip
Pittman Asphalt, a Division of YCS Holdings Ltd. in Prince George, has just won a contract of approximately $6.6 million. The scope of work on this project is to rehabilitate the existing surface using hot mixed asphalt pavement. Paving is not anticipated to begin prior to July 2, 2008. The project completion date is August 31, 2008.

Jackpine Flats – Old Lakelse Lake Road Thornhill – Resurfacing
Standard Paving Inc. of Terrace has been awarded a contract of almost $1.8 millon.
The project will provide asphalt overlay and selected level courses sections of the existing sealcoat surface from Thornhill Creek to Williams Creek, on Old Lakelse Lake Road. Several side roads in the Thornhill area will also be included. Work on the project started on May 5, 2008, and the project completion date is June 28, 2008.

Hwy 97 – Salmon River Bridge to Red Rocky Creek Approximately 50 km North of Prince George – Resurfacing
Green Roads Recycling Ltd. of Fernie has been awarded a contract valued at just under $4.5 million to resurface 15 km of Highway 97 between Salmon River Bridge and O’Dell Road and 33.8 km between 2.3 km North of Tallus Road to Red Rocky Creek using hot-in-place and admix. Upon completion of this project, this section of Hwy 97 will have a uniform driving surface free of defects. This will improve basic access for resource extraction, tourists and residents. The work start date is June 2008, and the project completion date is September 12, 2008.

Hwy 16 – Buck Creek No.1692 and Houston OH No.2285 – Bridge Resurfacing in the town of Houston BC
Cortez Construction Ltd. of Kamloops has been awarded a contract valued at just over $6.5 million to provide the concrete resurfacing of the 52m-long Houston Overhead and the 39m-long Buck Creek Bridge Decks. Upon completion of this work, the concrete bridge decks will have no defects, provide a smoother running surface and better protect the substructure. The work was started in April 2008, and the project completion date is June 29 2008.

Cortex Construction Ltd. of Kamloops has been awarded a contract valued at just under $600,000 to complete the concrete resurfacing of the 125m long Smithers Bridge. Upon completion of this work, the concrete bridge deck will have no defects, provide a smoother running surface and better protect the substructure. The work start date is mid to late April, 2008, and the project completion date is June 29, 2008.

Hwy 52N – Northern 26.92 km of Hwy 52N between Hwy 97 and Brassey Creek

Hwy 97 – Pine Pass and Taylor Hill Segments
ARC Asphalt Recycling Inc. of Kamloops has been awarded a contact of just over $1.7 million to resurface (using hot-in-place recycling) 6 km of Highway 97 from Azouzetta south in the Pine Pass, 6.3 km on the South Taylor Hill and intermittent segments on the North Taylor Hill and Kiskatinaw Hill to address pavement deterioration. The work is scheduled to begin on June 30, 2008, and the project completion date is September 15, 2008.

Hwy 16 – Silver Road to McBride Timber Road – Passing Lane 25 km west of Prince George
Contractor IDL Projects Inc. of Prince George, B.C. has won a contract for just over $2.6 million. The project is to construct an east bound passing lane and other important safety improvements on Highway 16 between the Silver Road and McBride Forest Road intersections. The construction of this new east bound passing lane is one of the most cost effective means to improve traffic flow and safety on the highway. Work starts in May 2008, and the project completion date is September 2008.

Upper Halfway Road #117 – Paving
Peters Bros Construction Ltd. of Penticton has been awarded a contract of just under $6.9 million to place asphalt surface over the newly constructed gravel roadway that was constructed during the 2006 to 2008 construction seasons. Paving the Upper Halfway Road will increase the legal access loading to 100% from km 0.00 to km 55.2, allowing industry and local users’ access to year round 100% axle loading. The updates will also reduce maintenance costs. Work was scheduled to begin at the end of April 2008 and will be completed August 15, 2008.

Hwy 16 – Endako to Fort Fraser Overhead – Hot in Place Recycling
Peter’s Bros. Construction Ltd. was awarded a $3 Million contract to resurface the section of Hwy 16, between Endako and the CNR Overhead East of Fort Fraser. This project involves hot-in-place recycling, a paving technique that uses recycled materials and reduces the emission of fossil fuels. The existing highway is showing signs of rutting and the asphalt concrete is deteriorating rapidly. Work is expected to begin in May 2008 and end by September 15, 2008.

Hwy 16 – Lee Rd. to Tete Jaune (Blackman Rd.) – Surface Improvements
Dawson Construction Ltd. recently won a $6.32 Million contract to rehabilitate 34.4 km on Highway 16, between Lee Road and Blackman Road. Work will include applying a level course and overlay on this section of highway. This project also includes paving of Westlund Road and Westlund Road West, and paving of CVSE site pull-outs. These improvements will provide a uniform driving surface, free of defects, as well as basic access for resource extraction, tourists and residents. Taking place approximately 27 km East of McBride, work is scheduled to start in June, 2008 and end by mid September, 2008.

Hwy 37 – Centreville to Boya Lake – Sealcoating
White Bear Industries Ltd. Just won a $1.68 Million contract to rehabilitate the section of Highway 37, from Centreville to Boya Lake Provincial Park. Work will consist of: aggregate production, single-graded aggregate seal through the Village of good Hope Lake, pulverization of the existing surface, base repair, as well as aggregate application and double sealcoat application from Good Hope Lake to Boya Lake. Surface improvements are expected to improve the safe transportation of people, services and goods. Work will take place approximately 2.0 km South of Good Hope Lake to Byoa Lake Provincial Park Access. Aggregate crushing may start any time upon this award, and sealcoating is expected to start in July, 2008. The project is scheduled for completion by August 15, 2008.

Hwy 29 – Cache Creek – Bridge Replacement
Formula Contractors BC Ltd. was just awarded a $1.28 Million contract to replace the aging 50 m, one-lane timber truss bridge with a new two-lane steel and concrete structure. The new bridge will improve safety and service to local, industrial and tourist traffic. It will also provide an alternate route for heavy traffic between Prince George and Fort St. John. Work will take place approximately 20 km West of Fort St. John, on Highway 29. The project is expected to start in April, 2008 and end June 30, 2008.

Hwy 16 – Pleasant Valley Bridge Repairs
The $354,002 contract was won by Surespan Construction. The bridge, located 3.2 kilometres west of Houston on Highway 16, will receive repairs from now until mid December. The bridge will be properly aligned, have its bearings changed and have shear keys and approach slabs installed. The structure previously sustained damage to its bearings. Temporary repairs were completed in 2006 to stabilize the bridge. The repair will permanently fix the issue.

Hwy 16 – Rainbow Summit to Terrace
A $6.35-million contract has been awarded to Pittman Asphalt, a Division of YCS Holdings Ltd., of Prince George, B.C. The project will pave the most seriously deteriorated sections of Highway 16 between Prince Rupert and Terrace and will include 12kms of paving between Rainbow Lake Road to Tyee Overhead, 15kms of patch paving from Tyee Overhead to Shames Bridge and milling and paving of the Sande Overpass and the Hwy 16/Kenney Street Intersection.
There will be overnight lane closures at the Sande Overpass and Kenney Street intersection with one lane open in each direction. Drive BC and local radio will provide updates. Work is expected to be completed by Spring 2008.

A $6.36-million contract was awarded to Interoute Construction Ltd. of Dawson Creek for improvements to the highway corridor. The work will take place between the Highway 97 intersection and the Highway 97 and 271 intersections. The work includes 4-laning the existing highway between 100th and 269 Road, improvements to the 269 and 271 intersections including installation of traffic signals, and frontage road upgrading and construction between 100th Avenue and 269 Road. Work is expected to be completed by Spring 2008.

Simon Fraser Bridge – Construction
A $31,607,061 contract has been awarded to Surespan Construction Ltd. of Vancouver, BC for the construction of the Simon Fraser Bridge, a $42 million project. This project will increase the capacity of Highway 97 across the Fraser River to four lanes by twinning the Simon Fraser Bridge. This section of Highway 97 services the southern approach into Prince George and provides highway access for southern communities, tourists and businesses. The bridge also connects a large industrial area on the south side of the Fraser River to Prince George. Work is expected to be completed by fall 2009.
