Cariboo Connector

Hwy 97 (John Hart) — Bennett Creek to Link Creek — Reconstruction and Upgrade Including Bridges
Cariboo Construction Ltd., Prince George was awarded a contract valued at $18,581,472.50 for the reconstruction of 11.2 kilometres of Highway 97 to meet a 90km/h design speed. The road width will be increased to provide 3.6m lanes and 1.5m paved shoulders. The road construction includes 2 kilometres of new grade along with two new bridge structures over the Pine River. Construction also includes two new small bridges replacing culverts over fish bearing streams. The project is expected to start in November, 2009 and end September 30, 2011.

Hwy 97 – Wright Creek – Passing Lane
Dawson Construction Limited was awarded a contract valued at $750,000 for paving of the Highway 97 Wright Creek Passing Lane.

Peace River Region – Beryl Prairie Road – Improvements and Sealcoating
Brocor Construction Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $3,663,457.26 for the application of a single sealcoat over existing sealcoat between kilometre 0 and kilometre 3.7. Between km 3.7 to km 7.8, there will be placement of non-woven geotextile and geogrid, 300 mm of WGB or IGB, and the application of a double sealcoat on the road surface. Between km 7.8 to km 12.7, existing road material will be used to build and shape the subgrade surface. This will be followed by the placement of 100 mm to 150 mm of SGSB across the surface, placement of a layer of non-woven geotextile and a layer of biaxial geogrid, placement of a 450 mm thick base course layer of WGB or IGB, and finally placement of a double-pass sealcoat hard surface. Through Brenot Creek, the road will be widened, concrete barriers will be installed, pullouts will be added at the top of the two hills and sight distance will be improved by removing a hump on the top of one hill and cutting back some of the bank that is currently obscuring sight distance. New culverts will be installed throughout the length of the project to improve drainage along the road. The project is expected to start in September 2009 and end in September 2010.

North Peace Area – Paving
Interoute Construction Ltd dba DGS Astro Paving was awarded a contract valued at $2,752,407.45 for gravel and first-time paving of 5.925 kilometres of subdivision and bridges roads in the North Peace District. Candidate roads include: Tucker Avenue, Tucker Road, Nurnberger Road, Lucas Road, and Bridges Road 244G. The project is expected to start in August 2009 and end in October 2009.

Hwy 97 – Mile 12 – Passing Lane
Tyam Construction Ltd was awarded a contract valued at $2,099,799.80 for the Highway 97 Mile 12 Passing Lane. The project is expected to start in August 2009 and end in October 2009.

Bissette Creek Bridge Replacement
Ruskin construction Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $2,956,542.00 for replacing the existing wooden bridge structure with a new steel structure.  The project is expected to start in July, 2009 and end May 14, 2010.

Hwy 16 and Domano/Tyner Intersection Improvements
IDL Projects Inc. was awarded a contract valued at $7,831,375.00 to enhance the safety of the motoring public and improve the capacity (mobility) through the  Highway 16 and Domano/Tyner intersection.  The safety and capacity objectives will be addressed by:

  • Adding dual left turn lanes on the Highway 16
  • Signalization improvements that permit only protected left turns onto Domano and Tyner Boulevard.
  • Adding an acceleration lane for motorists turning right onto Highway 16 from Domano Boulevard.
  • Enhanced deceleration lanes for exiting onto Domano and Tyner Boulevards.
  • Reducing superelevation of Highway 16 through the intersection to improve sight distance of Domano and Tyner Boulevards.
  • Installing raised median treatment that ties to existing median treatment at both ends of the project.
  • Connecting with cycling and walking trail networks within the project site.
  • The project is expected to start in August 2009 and end October 31, 2009.

PEP Project – Bulkley Stikine Ogilvie Creek Multi-plate
Formula Contractors B.C. Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $1,482,963.50 for replacing the existing failed (during a flood in 2007) 3 metre diameter multi-plate culvert with a 34 metre steel girder, precast concrete bridge. The project is expected to start to be completed in October.

Hwy 97 – Sintich Road to Continental Way – Overpass Capacity Increase
Pennecon Heavy Civil Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $12,028,030.00 for increasing the capacity of approximately 3.0 km from Sintich Road to the Continental Way Overpass of Hwy 97. The capacity will be increased from two or three lanes to four through lanes plus ancillary lanes at intersections. The project is expected to start May 2009 and end June 30 2010.

Hwy 52E (Boundary Road) – Airport Road to Wapiti Forest Service Road – Improvements
Peter’s Bros. Construction Ltd was awarded a contract valued at $6,402,406.2 for Boundary road: Section 109.7 to 110.9 and Section 115.7 to 130.9. The contractor will pulverize existing asphalt, place geogrid and 25 mm well-graded base course aggregate, pave and place shoulder aggregate. The project is expected to start June 2009 and end Fall 2009.

Hwy 97 – Sintich Road to Continental Way Overpass – Resurfacing
Pennecon Heavy Civil Ltd. was awarded a contract valued at $12,028,030.00 to increase the capacity of approximately 3.0 km of Highway 97 from two or three lanes to four through lanes, plus ancillary lanes at intersections, from Sintich Road to the Continental Way Overpass. The project is expected to be completed by June 30 2010.

Hwy 97 – Sintich to Fraser River – Increase Capacity
IDL Projects Inc. was awarded a contract valued at $7,831,711.01 to increase the capacity of Hwy 97 from two or three lanes to four through lanes plus ancillary lanes at intersections, from Sintich Road to the Simon Fraser Bridge. The project is scheduled to begin fall 2008 and end October 2009.

Hwy 97 – Simon Fraser Bridge – Four Laning Bridge Approach Section
IDL Projects Inc. was awarded a contract valued at $4,685,038 for building the bridge approach to tie the new Simon Fraser Bridge into Highway 97. The project is expected to start August 2008 and end October 2009.

Cariboo Connector – Prince George South – Weigh Scale Relocation and 4 Laning
JJM Construction Ltd. was just awarded an $18 million contract to build a commercial vehicle inspection station and expand the Cariboo Connector.  The new scale location will reduce average commercial vehicle delay by several minutes per vehicle, and the new road will increase the route’s safety and efficiency.  The project is expected to start in May 2008 and end October 2009.

Simon Fraser Bridge – Construction
A $31,607,061 contract has been awarded to Surespan Construction Ltd. of Vancouver, BC for the construction of the Simon Fraser Bridge, a $42 million project. This project will increase the capacity of Highway 97 across the Fraser River to four lanes by twinning the Simon Fraser Bridge. This section of Highway 97 services the southern approach into Prince George and provides highway access for southern communities, tourists and businesses. The bridge also connects a large industrial area on the south side of the Fraser River to Prince George. Work is expected to be completed by fall 2009.
