Hwy 99 – Function Junction to Village Gate Boulevard – Whistler Improvements

Separate from the Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement Project, Hwy 99 Whistler Improvements include: improvements at the southbound approach to Function Junction; an easier grade at Nordic Hill; wider shoulders for cycling and incident management; two improved bus bays/pullouts, and four new bus bays/pullouts. The project is scheduled for completion in fall 2009.

Within this 7.6-km project, BC Hydro is installing underground concrete duct banks and manholes alongside 6.5 km of the northbound lanes. These projects are being coordinated to ensure the public is only impacted once.

In 2008 traffic impact is expected to be minimal.

As the project advances, however, rock blasting and other roadwork may require highway delays and closures consistent with the Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement Project:

  • Delays of 15 mins throughout the daytime during non-peak periods.
  • Delays of 30 mins throughout the night time hours only
  • Night time closures only where single lane alternating traffic cannot safely accommodate vehicles or cannot be done in 30 min delays and approved by the ministry
  • Day time closures during the noon hours for blasting or work that can not be done at night time and approved by the ministry
  • Closures will be avoided in peak seasons: Winter December 1 – April 20, and Summer June 16 – September 15
  • Allow extra travel time for daytime traffic delays of up to 15 minutes in non-peak hours, and nighttime delays of up to 30 minutes.
