| Interchange
operations specifically at Main Street, Fern Street and
Mountain Highway at the north end of the Ironworkers Memorial
Second Narrows Bridge in the District of North Vancouver
are being impacted by growing traffic volumes, affecting
the movement of goods and people through this area and impacting
access to the Vancouver Port Lynnterm facilities. In addition,
specialized community destinations, such as Capilano College,
can attract large volumes of traffic over short time periods
resulting in lengthy queues, at times extending onto Highway
1.
Development
continues to occur in the area. In particular, the Squamish
Nation’s March 2005 announcement of the proposed Seymour
Creek Village commercial development and potential port
expansion will introduce additional traffic in the interchanges.
In 2001,
a comprehensive traffic impact assessment of the proposed
development was completed and identified six locations for
off-site road improvements to meet the requirements of the
development.
-
Mt. Seymour/Seymour Boulevard Intersection
- Mt.
Seymour/Riverside Drive Intersection
- Seymour
Boulevard/Dollarton Highway Ramp and Main Street Intersections
- Main
Street/Mountain Highway Intersection
- Mountain
Highway/Fern Street Intersection with Highway 1 eastbound
exit ramp/Fern Street Intersection; and
- Highway
1 westbound ramp with Lillooet Road/Mt. Seymour Parkway
Intersection
On Oct.
12, 2005 about 120 people attended a public information
session where the design plans for these six intersection
improvements were presented, as well as the study parameters.
The following link will provide a copy of the information
presented.
Construction
is planned for early 2006 for the Main Street/Mountain Highway
Intersection, and Seymour Boulevard/Dollarton Highway Ramp
and Main Street Intersections, with the remainder of the
work planned for later in the year.
In order
to provide efficient and effective interchange operations,
the Ministry is initiating a comprehensive analysis and
study to consider options for long-term improvements. This
study will support the Province’s transportation goals
of assisting economic development in the local area and
region.
The
study will also be cognizant of and take into account other
road network improvements that are underway or planned in
the area, such as the improvements to the Dollarton Hwy.
Bridge over the Seymour River. Also located within the study
area is Phibbs Exchange, an important transit transfer point.
