The Gateway Program was established by the Province of British Columbia in 2003 in response to the impact of growing regional congestion, and to improve the movement of people, goods and transit throughout Metro Vancouver with efficient transportation choices and better connections. One of the main objectives of the Gateway Program is to reduce congestion-related idling, which contributes to reduced regional air quality.
Gateway road and bridge improvements will complement other regional road and transit improvements planned or already underway (such as the Border Infrastructure Program, the Evergreen Line, the Golden Ears Bridge Project and the Provincial Transit Plan).
The Program reflects the need for a balance of transit, road and bridge improvements, to keep traffic moving, our economy strong and our region liveable.
