Railway Crossings Maintenance Responsibilities by Service AreaMaintaining railways crossings is primarily the responsibility of the Railway Authority (RA), although the Province has some limited responsibilities for maintenance. The Province has included those maintenance functions in the agreements with the maintenance contractors. For full details on the contractor’s responsibilities, refer to the Maintenance Specifications, Chapter 1-230 (Railway Crossing Maintenance). When the RA performs work that is a cost responsibility of the Province, the contractor must pay the RA for such work. In the attached report, the column "MoT Maintenance Pct" indicates the percentage of cost responsibility to the contractor for crossing maintenance for each railway crossing. Crossing maintenance requires close coordination of railway and contractor forces to ensure site safety. This does not include the railway signal maintenance costs. Signal maintenance is not performed by, or the responsibility of, the maintenance contractor. Some crossings on this list are included for inventory purposes only and show "0%" in the “Mot Maintenance Pct” column. These crossings are still required to be inventoried for various business cases. For example, a railway structure over the highway where the railway maintains the structure at their cost but we still are required to maintain information regarding the facility. A another example may be a municipal railway crossing adjacent to a ministry road where the railway approach is the highway intersection and affects our traffic (may also have railway signals connected to traffic lights). The Overhead and Underpass structures are listed along with the level crossings. The bridge numbers have not been copied over to the spreadsheet as the cross-referencing and data input of the numbers into each system is in progress. All Railway Crossings – 57 KB PDF – 22 pages
