When customers of multiple agencies overlap, there are opportunities to increase convenience and overall customer satisfaction while reducing agency operating costs. The RFID Interoperability Best Practice Guideline is a valuable resource for public and private transportation agencies seeking greater efficiency by streamlining identification technologies.
Three ways to implement interoperability:
- Physical level
(using compatible onboard units and roadside equipment)
- Back-office level
(sharing information to widen the base of known customers and sharing administrative resources)
- Business process level
(coordinating policies or rules to reduce overall operations complexity)
RFID can be used to verify commercial vehicle credentials, grant vehicle access to facilities, and assign vehicle charges for use of facilities. The vehicle identification is used as a link to access other information needed by the application(s) such as vehicle owner, vehicle characteristics, safety and registration compliance status, and payment account status.
The Guideline also presents a case study of the Vancouver initiative between TransLink, Transportation Investment Corp., and BC Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure, which are working together to achieve multiple levels of interoperability between Golden Ears Bridge tolling, Port Mann Bridge tolling, and the Weigh2GoBC commercial vehicle program.
